Boosting Development Speed with Visual Studio Code and Python Unittest

In my recent experience, I've been exploring ways to speed up development processes using various tools. One such tool is ChatGPT4, which has been instrumental in helping me build a VSCode extension. The extension was built relatively quickly, and I was able to make good progress thanks to the support of GitHub Copilot.

When working on projects with multiple modules across different folders, it's essential to have a clear understanding of how each module interacts with others. In my case, I've set up a project structure where all modules reside in their common root directory. This allows me to use python -m unittest discover -help to get help on the meaning and usage of various modules.

Another useful tool I've been using is pytest daemon, which has significantly reduced our 15 seconds import time. By leveraging this tool, we can now focus on improving it further, rather than just patching up the issue temporarily.

In my experience, building the initial iteration of pytest daemon took around a week, but it was a fun challenge that ultimately supported our goal of helping engineers move faster.

I've learned that striving for an 80/20 approach and compound from there is key to delivering value and learning quickly. Additionally, adopting Progress Over Perfection as one of our Company Principles has been instrumental in driving progress.
